Obviously this isn't what I want, but its a start and I can now start thinking about creating a advert for SearchBox!

Success
After a few hours messing around researching and trying to find decent tutorials I finally found one which allowed me to create a short cube using a pre made script from aescripts.com
Obviously this isn't what I want, but its a start and I can now start thinking about creating a advert for SearchBox!

After Effects Scripts
I've done some research regarding After Effects Scripts, and found out a fair few things which I didn't know before.
After Effects uses a language called ExtendScript, ExtendScript comes from JavaScript and uses all the same principles that JavaScript does.
To allow yourself to script within After Effects you must first find the ExtendScript Toolkit, to get here navigate to File > Script > Script Editor. This will allow you access to the ExtendScript editor, ExtendScript saves as .jsx file, however you are also able to export as binary, which has the .jsxbin extension.
If you haven't used ExtendScript Editor before to access all of the features please choose Edit > Preferences > General(Windows) or After Effects > Preferences > General (Mac OS), you must then select Allow Scripts to write files and access network option. ESTK Also has a JavaScript Debugger included which is very handy to know to get to this you must go to Preferences > General and Select the Debugger.
When you type script you must save it within the After Effects file, this is so that After Effects knows where to find the scripts. If your files aren't within the folder then After Effects will not be able to find it.
You are also able to execute scripts from the command line and from AppleScript.
ExtendScript has many functions all are similar to JavaScript;
As you can see there are many different operators out there for the Script if you would like to know what each script do

Youtube Videos
This week I've hunted around Youtube for some videos on how I would like my Rubiks cube to potentially look like.
These have customisable templates so I can atleast get a feel for After Effects again before I start designing my own.

This was one of my favourites, I enjoy the way this flows and the music behind it goes very well, however I feel I could work with this, but would need to make it feel more agile and elegant rather than how it feels at the moment which is all sort of aggresive and angry.
This portrays what I want exactly, however this also seems super complicated to do, this template also costs money, which I am contemplating spending, just so I can see how this works.

Rubiks Cube Template, After Effects
For my project I need to research into Rubiks Cube Templates within After Effects, this will allow me to create a advert for my concept.
Unfortunately no one wants to give information away for free, but I have spoken to my lecturer about this and there is a way to do this through the use of scripts.
So you set one block as the parent and this will control your whole cube, you then make all your other cubes children of this one block. You then create a script saying that when the main on is turning to 140 degrees then one of the other will move to 80 etc. Just so that everything moves at the same time.
I plan to take a week to research after effects scripts and play around with them before I start creating a short motion clip on how SearchBox will work.

Visual Concept Image
I've been working on more visual's this afternoon to show what my project will look like.
So we can see from this the user has typed in Social Networking, and has formed a cube of social networks.
The idea is to get users to touch the icons and the websites load up, so if they hit the blogger image they would be forward onto blogger and so on.

Practice Photo's
So i've spent some time creating practice images in photoshop, I've achieved an image which im not happy with however, it is something for now until i figure out how to actually use the 3D tool properly.
But this is my first attempt at a prototype of SearchCube
It doesn't look much but this was my first attempt obviously I am going to keep perservering with this until I feel that it is right. However from this image I can explain my idea better and hopefully give people a better understanding on how I want the final product to look like.
After a discussion with my lecturer I was reminded how to create vpe's and export them either as a vpe file or as a 3ds file, this allows me to play around and create mock images.
The above image allow for a clear sort of visual of the type of idea i have, the results will differ per cube and wont be the same on each cube. The user will then either swipe left or right to view the different results on the sides of the cubes.
The user will be able to select a cube individually, once selected the user will be able to either swipe, up, down, left or right to view the desired website.
I have put together another image which includes the search bar, and different images.
These are my first drafts sort of things, just so i can represent my concept in some sort of visual form, as personally I sometimes struggle explaining my point.

SearchBox Proposal
What is SearchBox?
SearchBox is a interactive Rubik's cube. SearchBox allows users to interact with it through the form of touch and gestures.
When a user uses SearchBox, they touch the search bar and use the interactive on screen keyboard and touch what the keyboard to input what they would like to search for. Once they have hit enter, SearchBox will get to work and return the results of the search.
The user will then be able to use hand gestures to filter through the results. Once they have found a article that they want to look at, they select it by touching the screen, the cube itself will then maximise onto the screen. When the cube has been maximised the user can then use hand gestures to rotate the cube and view the results on the cube, once decided they can select the side of the cube they would like to view. When the user has finished viewing that side of the cube they can then use another hand gesture to rotate to the next page. To close to the article and return the cube the user can slowly close there hands together.
How do I intend to do this?
Due to the timescale given being relatively short, I won't be able to finish the project, however I do plan to continue this and eventually build this. However for now I will create mock ups of the idea, an advert for it using After Effects, still images using Photoshop and actual drawings. After I've done this I will create one side of the cube, and attempt to get the search engine working. I will try and get the touch screen to also work.
A Gantt Chart will be provided with a logical timescale taking into consideration all of my other modules that I am studying.
What am I going to research?
Okay so I haven't really got enough knowledge to do this, so I obviously need to research some things. I need to research gesture interaction, as well as touch interaction, not so much what they are because I am aware of what they are, but more of how to create objects using this technology. Creating a search engine is a pretty big project with in itself, I need to look at how to create one so they people can use it as easy as they use Google. I've attempted to look at Rubik's Cube After Effects temples and there isn't a lot out there, however I have spoken to my lecturer and I need to research in AE Scripts, there are templates out there however people want you to pay for them.
Research will be included into the Gantt Chart, allowing me to see where I need to be. Along with this I need to set myself weekly targets because of the way I am, if I just do pure research for however long I will lose interest and begin to get frustrated.
Recognising my target audience if fairly important as well, overall I would like everyone to be able to use SearchBox, just as everyone uses Google, therefore my target audience would be everyone. However I am unable to please everybody.

Idea
Production Practice allows us to develop our own concepts which we have been thinking of doing, and actually create them.
I've had an idea in my head for a few months, and never really have the motivation to do it, however now that I will be getting marked for it, I figured why not.
My initial idea was to create something called a Search Box, this would be a Rubiks cube, which shows recent news and past news. However, I was going to allow for the option for the user to search for a product, this idea is achievable however, I've not got the time currently to do this, on top of my other university work.
So I spoke to my lecturer about this, and he suggested that I create a sort of prototype of this. In which I replied how and he told me to research, although he did come and help me.
He showed my how to create a 3D cube within Photoshop.
There is a certain method to create these which I should note down.
1. Grab a cube from online.
2. Insert this image into photoshop
3. Create a vanishing point and draw the cube, be accurate to ensure best quality.
4. Once created you can then either show or hide each side of the cube, if you double click then you are able to place an image onto the one side.
5. Dupe this until satisfied.
Example from this afternoon:
This is fairly rough, I will be doing this again to allow me to close the visible gaps that we can see.
I will be creating multiple images to show my idea, so that It can be easily explained to people, when it come to finding a team to help develop this project.
The concept itself is easily understood, however it will take me a little while to develop, which is why I'm getting together a fixed sort of image of the finished project will look like.
The Concept
I had the idea of creating a rubiks cube called the search box, initially this would be used to as a visual search engine. However after some talks with my lecturer I started to see a lot more potentially within this.
Not only would this be a visual search engine, but it would also be Interactive. Allowing users to interact with the concept makes them feel like they are involved, I want to create something that will turn a page with a simple hand gesture, or change a complete article with a different gesture. I would also like this to go mobile, allowing users to share there searches with other people. Users of searchbox would both require the app, however they would be able to share the searches and find common ground on searches, allowing the app to search for common things.
That sounds pretty confusing so allow me to give you an example:
If User 1 was to search for Apples, they would recieved a whole cube of apples, and User 2 was to search for Pears they would recieve a whole cube of pears, although if they was to combine these and share there searches then the app would recognise that both users had been looking at fruit and give them both a cube of fruits.
For myself alone this is a big project, however I don't want to stop there, I'm going to need some sound when I Users search for information I want there to be a sound, when they recieve someone elses information they should be informed via sound and a pop up message. Not only that if someone is using the visual search engine on the web, I want a ambient in the background.
Research will play a big part of this development due to it being fairly heavy!
